Wanakiwi is a free tool that enables you to retrieve local files encrypted by WannaCry ransomware, which is capable of 'kidnapping' data stored on your equipment. It is compatible with any version of Windows, from XP to 7.
The only requirement in order to retrieve your data is that you have not restarted your computer since it became infected. This small program works by means of a command line, and the corresponding output does not erase the already encrypted files, which will remain on the device with the WNCRY extension and encryption key.
Once the data has been retrieved, it is highly recommended that you format your device and install a version of the Windows operating system which has not been affected. There is already a Windows 10 update that blocks WannaCry.
Wanakiwi is a handy tool which may not prevent you from being infected by such widespread ransomware, but can definitely get you out of a pickle in certain circumstances.
